Description:
Would you like to spend a beautiful day in a romantic area near Prague and enjoy views of the Vltava river while walking? No need to travel far from Prague for this hike. Just 30 minutes by bus and you are out of the city in the rocky valley.
The St. John’s Currents Nature Trail leads through the romantic deep rocky valley of the Vltava River, a section of the former St. John’s Currents, now flooded by the Štěchovice Reservoir. The trail was most popular in the interwar period when the first traveller settlements were built on the banks of the Vltava River.
The Midsummer Currents Trail leads high above the Vltava River, a romantic canyon that used to be daunting for cargo ships and rafters, whose life was made difficult by the untamed river where the transport of their cargo was threatened. Until the 1930s, they were able to sail in small boats all the way to Prague with cargoes of wood, stone or salt. Overcoming this stretch of the Vltava River was not easy because the impact of a long raft on a hidden boulder or the numerous bends in the river led to wrecks and often death of the rafters.
The St. John’s Currents were also sought by the first canoeists who built simple dwellings around the river and later log cabins. This is where the first traveller or “tramp” settlements originated. With the construction of the Štěchovice Dam, the whole valley and their settlements disappeared under the surface of water. However the tramps found their way back here, and today you can walk the first tourist path in the country that was built above the river in 1889.
Towards the end of our trip we will stop for a good lunch, of course! We will treat you to a main course and a drink at a traditional restaurant with a local beer.
This is a very personalized trip based on our own experiences we want to share. Our guests can expect a lot of individual attention with advice on clothing, weather, what to pack, as well as fitness levels prior to the trip. Also we will be ensuring your safety and welfare during the hike and the entire trip, as well as helping you with any translations needed when ordering lunch or buying gifts. Most importantly, however, we will be guiding you through this remarkable countryside and offering you the most unique experience.
We will meet in the morning at the Prague departure point and return back to Prague, filled with experiences, in the evening, just in time for dinner.
